About

Many former racing greyhounds have their lives on hold in cages because adoption groups can not find enough foster homes. Some non-violent inmates just need a friend and would welcome an opportunity to make amends while exploring a better way of living. Together, we can impact both.

Prison Greyhounds is dedicated to placing former racing greyhounds in permanent loving homes, while providing the inmate handler with the opportunity of finding compassion, unconditional love and rehabilitation through the human-animal connection.

Headquartered in Indianapolis, Prison Greyhounds is an all-volunteer 501c3 nonprofit organization. We will rescue greyhounds that are in the prime of their life, and match them with specially selected inmates within Indiana prisons. The dogs will be fostered, trained, socialized, loved and then adopted to forever homes in the community. Their inmate handlers will gain job skills, teamwork experience, and a valuable opportunity to make amends while exploring a better way of living. This program will rehabilitate the inmate-handlers before they are released into our community. A team of two-prisoners-per-dog will train the dogs for life outside of a racing kennel. The dogs provide a calming effect on the entire prison population. We provide curriculum, volunteers to coach the inmates, and all necessary supplies. We find responsible families that will adopt the greyhounds upon graduation. The inmate-handlers then receive a new former racer to repeat the process.
